20+ Years of Volunteering with Habitat!

Gordon Jones has been volunteering with Habitat Tucson for more than 20 years!

When Gordon was growing up, he built his own house in Indiana. “I built it because it was the only way I was going to get a house – I didn’t have any money,” he says. That’s part of what drew him to volunteering with Habitat Tucson. He knows how to build a house from scratch, and he knows how meaningful it can be to build a place to call home.

“Gordon is so even-tempered and just a helpful and very loving,” says his wife, Norma. “He likes working for Habitat – it seems to go along with his thinking of how to help people, and he enjoys everybody.”

A volunteer, Gordon loves the chance to be able to put his skills to work every week at the build site. He’s especially fond of rough framing and finish framing, and the big build days like World Habitat Day where hundreds of volunteers rally together with hardworking families.

Gordon sees his work as an extension of the work of God. “I’m trying to serve mankind because I have the ability to do it. And the Lord is honored when you do something like that—helping other people.”

“If he sees a need, he’s there to help. So—he’s a keeper! I’m keeping him!” Norma says, laughing.

“All Habitat volunteers like Gordon share a special gene,” says long-time volunteer Pat Hirschman. “The caring and sharing gene!”

“Habitat enables people that otherwise couldn’t the opportunity to get a house, get a home. It’s nice to be a part of that.”
