Loutasha, fondly known as Tasha, is on the brink of achieving a dream that once seemed far from reach—becoming a homeowner. Her story is one of resilience, determination, and an unyielding commitment to building a better life for herself and her two sons.
Tasha’s journey began in the Navajo Nation in Northern Arizona, where she spent much of her life. In 2016, she made the courageous decision to move to Tucson in pursuit of a fresh start.
"I came to Tucson with almost nothing—just a bag of clothes—and the hope that I could create a better future for my family," she recalls
It was a daunting move, but one driven by her desire to overcome personal struggles and break the cycle of instability she had experienced growing up.
Tasha is a recovering alcoholic, and her decision to seek long-term treatment and relocate to Tucson was pivotal. “I wanted to get better, not just for myself but for my sons. I grew up in an unstable environment, and I didn’t want that for them,” she explains. The loss of her older son’s father and the hardships of her past served as catalysts for change.
In Tucson, Tasha has worked as a dental assistant for nearly seven years, a career she enjoys for its fast pace and variety. Despite her hard work, finding stable, affordable housing remained a challenge. She describes her current living situation as cramped and temporary, having had to move from a previous residence due to skyrocketing rent. “Our last place had so many issues,” she shares. “The A/C broke during the summer, and it took months for the landlord to replace it. It felt like nothing would get fixed unless it was a complete emergency.”
One day, while scrolling through social media, Tasha stumbled upon an advertisement for Habitat for Humanity. She saw it as a sign. “I had been praying for a way to move forward, for a home of our own. Habitat ads started popping up, and I figured, why not apply? The worst they could say was no.”
Since being accepted into the program, Tasha has embraced the experience wholeheartedly. She along with her boyfriend Emilio (Keon’s dad), completed their sweat equity hours, a requirement that involves contributing time and effort to Habitat’s projects. “The construction sites have been amazing. I’ve learned so much—from using drills to understanding how homes are built. The staff is so patient and willing to teach, and I’ve realized how much I enjoy this work.”
Her sons, especially her eldest, are equally excited. “He tells me how proud he is and thanks me for everything I’m doing for us. That’s a good feeling because he’s acknowledging all our hard work,” Tasha says with a smile.
For Tasha, a Habitat Tucson home represents more than just walls and a roof. It symbolizes stability, safety, and a place where her family can thrive. “Home means stability,” she says. “It’s our sanctuary, a place to feel safe and loved. My sons will have their own rooms and a sense of permanence.”
Looking ahead, Tasha is filled with hope.
