Five years ago, Rebecca and her children left a Kenyan Refugee camp and traveled to Tucson, Arizona. The massive journey was a pursuit for a better life, security, education and most of all freedom. They found these things and more, but they had not yet found themselves a place to call home.
Until now.
“We weren’t all able to live together as a family,” said Ajang, her 17-year-old son. “Home will help bring my family together.”
Now, Rebecca’s boys are excited and inspired to see their mother building a home of her own through Habitat Tucson’s homeownership program.
Additionally, Rebecca worked hard to achieve U.S. citizenship along with two of her youngest sons. The boys are determined to show their mother how much her hard work means to them.
“It’s life changing,” said Leek, age 14. “She took care of us in Kenya, and now we are giving it back to her.”
Rebecca looks forward to completing her financial education courses and enjoys building her home alongside her future neighbors. She believes that her home will provide other opportunities for her sons – including college educations.
“Home means less stress, being around mom, and going to college,” said Majok, age 15. “We’ll finally have a stable place to come back to.”
