For Ricardo and Norma, the dream of owning a home has been two decades in the making. Through perseverance, community support, and sheer determination, they are now just months away from moving into their forever home—a four-bedroom house they’ll proudly call their own in December 2025.
Ricardo and Norma’s family story is one of resilience and growth. Originally from Mexico, Norma came to the United States from Sonora in 2004, while Ricardo arrived from Michoacán in 1999. Together, they built a life centered around their four children, whose ages span from college to elementary school. Their family embodies a remarkable journey of hope and hard work.
For 22 years, Ricardo has worked at a local restaurant, where he’s found not just stability but a sense of belonging. “I really enjoy my team, and the owners are wonderful,” he shared. Norma, ever supportive and resourceful, was introduced to the housing program by a friend who had successfully applied. “She recommended it and even helped us find the application and submit it,” Norma said with gratitude.
The road to homeownership was paved with challenges, especially earlier this year when their landlord sold the house they had rented since 2017. Without advance notice, the new owner moved into part of the home, demanding that the family clear out the garage and an additional living space. “It was incredibly stressful,” Norma recalled. “She confronted us daily, asking when we were moving out.” Despite the upheaval, the family managed to find a new rental, knowing it was only a temporary stop before achieving their dream.
Through the housing program, Ricardo and Norma began accumulating the required sweat equity hours. They embraced the process, with their children actively participating. Ricardo Jr., the eldest, quickly completed his 50 hours of service. Christopher, who recently turned 16, eagerly joined in. “They are both so proud to help build our home,” Ricardo said. “They can’t believe they’re building not just their house but others’ as well.”

The couple plans to celebrate their new home with a housewarming party, inviting friends and family, including the friend who introduced them to the program. “This is a dream we’ve had for so long,” Ricardo said. “It’s a lot of satisfaction knowing we’ve built something lasting for our family.”
They’ve gone on to tell others about the program and their experiences throughout their journey. They both share that they find people are often hesitant to apply because they hear that they have to contribute to the construction and do not have any experience. Ricardo’s advice: “They need to go see for themselves, to go and do the construction for themselves. They’ll see that in reality, it isn’t difficult.”
As they finish their remaining sweat equity hours and watch their house take shape, Ricardo and Norma are filled with anticipation. Their story is a testament to the power of perseverance, community, and family. In just one year, they’ll close the chapter on decades of renting and step into a future they’ve dreamed of for so long—a home filled with love, laughter, and the memories yet to come.
