Happy to Pay Her Mortgage: Maria Flores

Maria Flores lost everything after her divorce. She and her year-old baby lived in a series of apartments in run-down neighborhoods. Then she heard about Habitat through her sister’s friend.

Maria moved into her new Habitat home in the spring of 2009, the exterior painted a soft pink.

“It was easy to work with Habitat,” she said. “They want you to have a good job and good credit history. They were flexible. I’m very grateful. It’s made a big difference in my life and my daughter’s life. I feel much more secure.”

“It was very nice the first day,” Maria added, “when they handed me the keys and my daughter opened the door. The first night, I couldn’t sleep.  I kept thinking: This is my house. It’s an enjoyment to send your mortgage payment because it’s your house. If it weren’t for Habitat, I wouldn’t have a house.”
