Maria Flores lost everything after her divorce. She and her year-old baby lived in a series of apartments in run-down neighborhoods. Then she heard about Habitat through her sister’s friend. “It was very nice the first day,” Maria added, “when they handed me the keys and my daughter opened the door. The first night, I couldn’t sleep. I kept thinking: This is my house. It’s an enjoyment to send your mortgage payment because it’s your house. If it weren’t for Habitat, I wouldn’t have a house.”
Maria moved into her new Habitat home in the spring of 2009, the exterior painted a soft pink.
“It was easy to work with Habitat,” she said. “They want you to have a good job and good credit history. They were flexible. I’m very grateful. It’s made a big difference in my life and my daughter’s life. I feel much more secure.”
