Prayers in the Walls: A 45th Anniversary Memory

My favorite memory with Habitat Tucson and a moment I’ll never forget? Sneaking new home buyer Elizabeth away during her home dedication for “just one more photo” in her doorway. As she traced her fingers along the walls she’d helped build, she whispered, “I wrote prayers here—right onto the studs and framing behind the drywall.”

Tears welled as she showed me where she’d handwritten Bible verses or prayers in every room—hidden blessings for the children who’d now grow up within these walls. In that moment it was more than a house; you could feel the love built into walls.

That’s the magic of 45 Years of Hammers, Hearts & Homes: not just the structures we raise, but the stories we seal inside them. Elizabeth didn’t just earn a home—she built a legacy with her own hands.
