Resilience Redefined: Maggie’s Story of Healing and Home

"The big word that keeps coming at me is 'peace.' That's how my life will change. To be able to raise my girls into a loving home to where they can feel at ease—it’s my number one thing.”

Maggie knows firsthand the benefits of the Habitat for Humanity housing program, as her sister is a former recipient who received keys 16 years ago. This had Maggie venture out and find a safe and affordable place to live. For now, she is living at her parent’s house. She is a divorced mother of two young daughters who found herself starting over and wanting to raise her girls in a loving home where they feel at ease. Maggie’s journey toward this vision is deeply personal.

After her divorce, Maggie went into a dark depression.

“I am a survivor of attempted suicide, that's something that I overcame, so I'm really proud of myself and I just want to stay uplifted over the rest of my life.”

She was able to overcome it by working on herself, using self-care therapy to stay uplifted and being there for her daughters. Maggie believes in being open and honest with her children. She values open communication and aims to be a safe haven for her children, encouraging them to share any obstacles they encounter. Working for Amazon, Maggie has plans to obtain her CDL certification once she settles into her new home. She dreams of traveling across America with her daughters, creating lasting memories together.

Maggie is focusing on her mental health and putting in her sweat equity hours towards her future Habitat home. Her favorite part of the process is the construction side. She’s learned a lot of things and is in awe of the houses, knowing that she’s contributed to building that house that could potentially be her home. Maggie and her daughters are particularly thrilled at the thought of their new kitchen — a space that promises to be filled with laughter, creativity, and the sweet aroma of baked goods. This kitchen will be more than just a place to cook; it will be a canvas for their culinary adventures and the joy of creating delicious memories comes to life.

It was her second time applying for the Habitat Homeowner program, but Maggie is no stranger to perseverance. Each setback has only strengthened her resolve, teaching her that resilience is a vital part of her journey. She remains dedicated to her personal growth, constantly seeking new opportunities to improve herself and create a brighter future for her daughters. Whether it’s attending workshops on financial literacy, exploring new job prospects, or delving into self-care practices, Maggie approaches each day with determination and hope.
