“I tie it more to a community,” says Pete Morgan, President of the Board at Habitat Tucson. “You can look at Habitat as ‘we build homes’ – and we do – but we’re really building neighborhoods, a bunch of folks that care about each other.”[mk_image src=”https://habitattucson.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/pete-morgan_3819.jpg” image_size=”large” align=”center”]For the past five years, Pete’s work with Habitat Tucson has including partnering with families, speaking at events, building alongside fellow volunteers, giving to Habitat, and serving on and then leading the board – working to make affordable housing a reality in our local community.
One of his favorite memories is partnering with Barry Souleymane and his family. “It was so impressive the sacrifices that they made in their lives, from Barry’s wife being in a refugee camp for 7 years, to meeting her husband, to making the trek to the United States where they knew nobody. Barry worked 3 or 4 jobs to just put food on the table.”[mk_image src=”https://habitattucson.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/pete-and-family_0120.jpg” image_size=”large” align=”center”]The day of their home dedication will always stand out in Pete’s mind. “Barry was just beaming with pride. You could just see this man feeling so happy and proud, with what he’s accomplished for his family.”
That’s always been Pete’s favorite part about Habitat – the humanity part. “We treat people – no matter who they are, no matter where they come from, no matter what their story – as equals.”[mk_image src=”https://habitattucson.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/adriana-pete-morgan_0010.jpg” image_size=”large” align=”center”]“You can look at Habitat as ‘we build homes’ – and we do – but we’re really building neighborhoods, a bunch of folks that care about each other.”Each Habitat neighborhood is an extension of that humanity. And it’s something Pete notices, when speaking with homeowners – they absolutely love their neighbors. “They’re not talking about just their house—they’re talking about the people around them. They’re talking about the community,” says Pete. “And I think that’s much more powerful than four walls.”You have the power to change lives. Start today!
