“I worked with Habitat in Florida and in Mississippi, through the churches my wife and I belonged to,” Scott Schupmann says. Together with a group of volunteers from their church, Scott and his wife helped build a Habitat house over 6 weekends from the slab to completion.
Scott has a great capacity for giving. Since retiring, he’s volunteered with Tucson Wildlife Center, the American Cancer Society, and FEMA. But he’s long held space in his heart for Habitat.
He admires Habitat’s mentality of giving a hand-up, not a hand-out, to those in need.

“There is nothing more satisfying than seeing someone get their first home when they have been struggling just to survive,” Scott says. “After I retired, I wanted to continue helping others.”
When Habitat Tucson was looking for a person to help at the main office with basic building and grounds maintenance, it seemed like a natural fit!
For the past several years, Scott has worked closely with Site and Facilities Supervisor Juan Garcia. Currently, Scott helps Juan with building and grounds maintenance at the Habitat Tucson offices.
He loves how he learns something new every day he volunteers. But even more than that, Scott appreciates how every action he takes helps support Habitat Tucson’s mission, to create safety, stability, and self-reliance through affordable homeownership.
“It makes me realize how lucky I have been, never having had to wonder where I would sleep or how we were going to feed our family,” Scott says. “Many people never had the opportunities I had. My wife and I believe it is our responsibility to help those we can— financially, through volunteering, and by using our God-given talents.”
